I already despise autonomous cars.

Why cant they go faster? Do they literally have to go the speed limit? Whats the legality there? Why are they are already messing up  my commute?!

Okay sorry, but these things are rolling road blocks in Detroit at least. I know there are more important things to work on first. Not killing people, weather, etc. But “go with flow” of traffic should be lower on that list too.

Once the road is full of autonomous cars, they'll be the ones defining the flow. And at that point, I'd hope that speed limits can be raised.

This is what pisses me off about speed limits near me: if someone is doing the limit (they are already at the legal limit of speed, any faster is illegal) they are usually impeding traffic and well beyond the flow of traffic. This goes double for highways near me where the limit is 90km/h. People usually only break these limits by 20/30kmh, but that means that anyone doing the speed limit becomes a rolling chicane. Can’t blame people for wanting to follow the law either.

That reminds me, got behind a drone in a Model 3 yesterday. Pensive hesitation at lights , wouldn’t exceed the limit no matter the flow of traffic, random brake taps, kept 100 yards behind any traffic in front of it, and then made an abrupt unsignalled lane change. “Autopilot” or local “professional” who is book smart and street stupid?

Insurance liability.

Imagine what would happen i f an autonomous car takes out a school bus on “take your dog & cat to school day”, and a bus load of children / puppies / kittens all dies a firey death. If the school bus were “keeping up with traffic” at 10mph over the speed limit and the autonomous car were not, that helps the argument that the autonomous car wasn’t at fault.

Who is at fault if a car doing the speed limit get rear ended by somebody that is not ?

They really need to stay in their own lane. Program them to stay in the HOV lane. Let the Prii and carpoolers deal with them.

You can already tell where speed limits are artificially low, but autonomous cars will just show it more.  Difference in speed and people switching lanes can be dangerous.

Oh yes. And sadly, that "moment" will be more like a few decades.

I’ve noticed a lot of random brake taps with these things too.

I think its going to be easy to bully them on the road ... and Im not sure how I feel about that yet.

I mean yea I get it. “Think of the children. ”  But many places/regions dont really do the “limit”, these things are going to mess with traffic before they make it better.

That sounds great but I’m dealing with them on surface streets.  Speed limit is “35" but the avenue is large enough that people do 45-50.  They seem to stick to the right lane at least.

I think one can already do that to semi-autonomous cars. My DD has some features, and if you change lanes in front of it, even within a distance one would considerable reasonable, it hits the brakes. The minimum following distance is too long, and still allows people plenty of room to cut in front, which then makes the car back off more. Eventually, you’ll be at the end of the line. It also gets spooked by barriers on curves, apparently thinking it is going to hit them, or that they are other cars.  It won’t be hard to make these things back off.
